Peace Mongering, Chicago-style

I bought my first "No War" button and am wearing it on my coat lapel. It’s like a magnet attracting those who are in agreement. Whether I’m in the grocery store or walking down the street, that button is a hot one, setting off pro-peace remarks from all manner of smiling or nodding strangers.

But, cosmically speaking, we’re strangers no more. Common goals have a unifying effect. And the more desperate the goal, the more unifying the effect! Hence, President Bush’s menacing agenda for war is, ironically, serving as a giant embrace — encircling and pulling together all of us anti-war strangers into one large cohesive fraternity.

I dare say if there’s an up side to this wayward U.S. leadership, it’s the stranger-to-stranger bonding for a Higher Good that it has catalyzed. Yes, perhaps, as we picket, pray, or march for peace, we may not know the person to our right or left. But we do know this: there are positive and forceful energies capable of transmitting powerful vibrations; when we join with others of like vibration (e.g. joining the peace movement), we are capable of forming a coherent, resonating system that can consciously connect with the universal intelligence. In other words, every one of us has within him or her "self" the power to effect not only dramatic personal change, but — when united with others of like mind — total global transmutation. Let us work together to reinforce this strength in numbers and embrace our "stranger" side.

We Have Power — Let’s Use It

It’s with this strength in numbers belief that Conscious Choice magazine will begin publishing a weekly e-mail newsletter in order to promote anti-war events in the greater Chicago area. You’re invited to sign up for this electronic newsletter; our hope is that, by having ready access to the information, a greater number of people will join the local peace promoting events and enlarge participation. (Please know that your e-mail information is considered confidential and will only be used for the purpose of keeping you informed.)

Additionally, we welcome your information if you have an anti-war event that’s planned and you would like to add it to our schedule — whether it be a candlelight vigil, teach-in, movie, march, etc.

It is our fervent belief that Conscious Choice magazine is an invaluable tool to help galvanize those who care most about averting the disastrous consequences of waging war. Recent anti-war protests, including Chicago’s, are said to be broader and louder than at any time since the Vietnam War, more than three decades ago. However, it is not a time to relax. Now is the time to speak even louder.

Asides

We ran a story ("All is Fur-given") in last month’s Conscious Choice that revisited details of the cruel and unnecessary treatment of animals that are raised for their fur.

In the wake of that story, Chicagoan Jackie Faber (mother of our managing editor) is a role model for those of us who believe in standing up for our values. Mrs. Faber won a raffle at a fundraising event last month. Her fabulous prize? A full-length beaver fur coat worth $6,000. Her reaction: she refused the fur and took a $1,000 credit. — Rebecca Ephraim
