April 2003 | Editor’s Note
All Grown-up
This April issue heralds the latest phase of Conscious Choice‘s maturation as it rolls out a new look on more environmentally conscious paper. To shape this fresh graphic personality, we enlisted News Design Associates under the expert direction of Tony Sutton. One of many changes is a new, larger typeface for easier reading. This latest design will help you to navigate the magazine, making it easier to find favorite stories and regular features. We’ve refined the look of our Professional Services Directory too, which we know a lot of our readers refer to regularly.
This issue is the first to be printed on 100 percent post-consumer, chlorine-free newsprint (the cover is 30 percent post-consumer, elemental chlorine-free). While the magazine has always been printed on recycled newsprint with soy-based ink, the post-consumer content has varied. Our latest move means all of the paper for the inside pages is derived from ordinary office and household waste coming mostly from your recycling efforts. With this approach, we not only help to increase demand for recycled paper but save a whole lot of resources in the process. In fact, Conscious Choice will detail its resource savings every month in an "Eco Audit." The research comes from the Environmental Defense Fund with data supplied by the mills that produce our new paper. No other publications in Illinois — and only a few nationally — publish such an audit on a monthly basis.
Our publisher Ross Thompson and editor-at-large Jim Slama founded Conscious Choice 15 years ago as Chicago’s alternative media voice for thousands of people who work to consciously walk their talk and live their values for a more just and sustainable world. To this end, the editorial content is embracing a broader array of Cultural Creative coverage by introducing new writers and photographers while emphasizing local coverage of healthy and holistic lifestyles, personal growth, spiritual development, environmental awareness, peace, and social justice.
We welcome your thoughts and feedback on our new design!
Transitions
It’s only fitting that this issue ushers in some changes among our local writers. We’re pleased to announce that JoAnn Milivojevic has accepted assignment as our regular Conscious Dining columnist. JoAnn is an established food and dining writer who has written for Veggie Life, as well as the esteemed guidebooks, Birnbaum’s, Fodor’s, and Frommer’s.
Our Body/Mind Health columnist Darlene Paris is moving into an expanded role as our lifestyle writer. Watch for her stories beginning in May.
Julia Mossbridge will take over the Body/Mind Health column in May. Julia brings a unique perspective as a neuroscientist who is also a specialist in personal and spiritual transformation. With this background, she imbues her writing with a fascinating and enriching perspective. For a taste of Julia’s work, read her feature story, "Swallowing the Wolf."
The Conscious Choice staff had a great time compiling and designing this "new look" issue. We hope it results in a more enjoyable read while continuing to cover the important issues that fuel your values-aligned life.
War is Stupid
As we go to press with this issue, we find ourselves on the brink of a preventable war-action on Iraq. Regardless, it behooves us to maintain pressure on the U.S. government to put a swift and humane (as possible) end to any war measure. This is an invitation to sign up for Peace Now, our electronic newsletter promoting anti-war events in the greater Chicago area. Please go to our home page to sign up.— Rebecca Ephraim
