Uncommon Healer
Practitioner Profile
Who: Dr. Richard Kupcho, chiropractic physician, Diplomate of Occupational Health at Northwestern Chiropractic College. Dr. Kupcho is a member of the American Chiropractic Association.
Quick Take: Kupcho is a man of uncommon compassion with authentic appreciation of human struggles. He combines humility with a rich intuition, a wealth of knowledge and healthy curiosity about the mysteries of body, mind and spiritual dimensions. He views himself as a practitioner who helps people understand the different paths taken to balance the mind/body equation. He uses alternative therapies to restore the integrity of structure, nutritional status and the emotional components of health. While many patients realize the solutions being offered to them just aren’t working, it’s often very confusing to know where to go next. Kupcho feels that chiropractic physicians are the natural choice to provide the proper direction in these instances. While drugs and surgery are often a necessity, there are many times a non-drug, non-surgical solution is more appropriate.
Old Vs. New: Kupcho utilizes functional medicine lab tests that open another window in the view of the clinical picture of patients. Standard blood and urine tests often miss identifying problems that keep patients feeling unhealthy and frustrated because they’ve been told time after time that the standard lab-test results are normal.
Additionally, Kupcho implements a relatively low-tech rehab approach to help strengthen and stabilize injured structural areas. “This approach allows people to get back to the activities they enjoy safely, and with confidence of preventing the same injury from recurring,” he said.
Knowing The Difference: Many patients initially come to Kupcho because of a particular pain in their spine or extremity. “But,” he said, “I believe many people come to understand that we provide many of the tools they need to reach a more optimal health and to truly incorporate a wellness and prevention lifestyle into their health program.”
Biggest Myth: While chiropractors have proven themselves as spinal specialists and often should be the first choice for spinal problems, the scope of this profession has evolved beyond this narrow view. Today, “chiropractic physicians function as integral players in ergonomic teams for corporate America, as team physicians for professional sports teams, nutritional consultants for women’s medical clinics and as gatekeepers in HMOs,” said Kupcho.
Kupcho feels that getting patients through the pain of an injury is often just the beginning of a return to health that takes many turns, and he finds many patients want to know more about what they can do to reclaim lost health.
Case Study: He said many people who have fallen through the cracks of traditional medical care and struggle with poor health of varying origins have found direction, hope and renewal by applying some basic chiropractic principles in their life. These include striking the proper balance between strength and flexibility.
Personal File: Kupcho is married and has been a practicing chiropractic physician for almost 20 years. He enjoys travel, cross-country skiing and cooking.
