Uncommon Healer

Practitioner Profile

By Nancy Ging

Who: Dr. Howard Wolin, M.D.

Quick Take: Dr. Howard Wolin is an integrative medical doctor whose practice is in Highland Park, Ill. Although Wolin’s practice includes techniques in all of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine’s five categories of healthcare, most of his techniques are represented by three categories: (1) Alternative Medical Systems (represented by homeopathy); (2) Mind-Body Interventions (represented by mental and spiritual healing work, both classical and alternative); and (3) Biologically Based Therapies (represented by supplementation for neurotransmitter depletion disorders such as anxiety, depression, ADD and ADHD and programs for hormone balancing).

Old vs. New: Wolin stresses that we no longer solely treat symptoms at the macroscopic level. We work, instead, at much deeper levels of existence. Knowing that our bodies developed (in utero), with cells laid down in layers, the present techniques we use are targeted to enhance the communication capabilities of our cellular layers to prevent disease and/or heal illness. Wolin’s integrative practice uses techniques that enable the cells in your layered structure to communicate, so your immune systems are strengthened and the causes of your out-of-balance or diseased conditions are identified and dealt with.

Knowing the Difference: How do we know if a technique or combination of techniques is aiding cellular communication? You can tell if after a period of time, you have more energy, fewer symptoms, enhanced focusing capabilities and a sense of improved overall well-being.

Biggest Myth: If you look healthy, you are healthy. When we view each other, we are looking at the top-most visual layer of our bodies. Disease starts with energy imbalances at the subatomic scale and may have years of development before a symptom on the top-most visual layer is seen. Looking at the outside of a house often tells you nothing about the wiring or plumbing conditions inside. It is the same with our bodies.

Case Study: A 46-year-old married woman with four children had a 15-year history of moderately severe depression, anxiety, insomnia and chronic fatigue. She had tried many anti-depressant and anti-anxiety drugs with no results, except for side effects. After four months of treatment with patented neurotransmitter supplementation, nutritional counseling and dietary alterations, she is depression-free, filled with energy, and sleeps through the night.

Personal File: As a teenager, Wolin decided to become a medical psychiatrist so he could follow in the footsteps of his family’s physician. He realized his dream, but after being in practice for a number of years, he was convinced that classical medical and psychiatric techniques were not healing his patients quickly enough and medicines he prescribed often produced serious side effects.

Wolin obtained a B.A. from New York University, University College of Arts and Science, and his M.D., from the University of Louisville, School of Medicine. He had his internship and psychiatric residency at Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago, where he was chosen chief psychiatric resident. He also graduated from the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute, and has 34 years of clinical practice, 12 of which have been integrative.

Wolin is located at 799 Central Ave., Highland Park, Ill., and can be contacted by phone, 847-926-4900 or e-mail.
