Gulf Coast Remembrance
By Heidi Dietrich featuring photos by Lindsey Meyers
While witnessing the despair, the outrage, the chaos and the insanity of Hurricane Katrina as a very pregnant mama, Lindsey Meyers made a promise to go deeper, to give more, to shout louder, to create more fiercely. She was determined to reach out to members of her own struggling community, and to the people of the South—a place she feels most connected to—a place where she feels most at home…and she has since made good on her word.

Lindsey can undoubtedly feel the shift in not only the way she creates, but also in the intrinsic life view she now holds. Waking with fervor to push for more change, she yearns to partake in making bold connections and to make art that is not simply about beauty and self-vision, but about the truth and trying nature of the present day and of these pressing times.

Lindsey fully utilizes art as a means of a connectedness to the world. Her art is influenced by the energy and intensity of social and cultural diversity, in addition to the comparisons between rural and urban environments. Her recent works delve into the darkness still surrounding race and class, as well as the political and socio-economic issues brimming underneath the surface of gentrification in Chicago. Her work further compares these issues to the great unmasking and unraveling of the American social system which was recently “re-introduced” into the public eye upon Katrina’s arrival along the Gulf Coast.

“My goal is to continue to raise awareness for not only the aforementioned residents of the Gulf Coast, but to keep the thoughts, emotions and artistic visions of America’s youth in the forefront of our hearts and in our daily existence. Children throughout the world are currently involved with unique programs such as this - their experiences, their individuality and their talent will permeate your life should you allow it to. Please support this cause. Please donate. Please volunteer.” Visit lindseymeyers.com.
