The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success
Deepak Chopra

Books can be read or listened to on tape, but if you prefer to “watch” a book instead, Deepak Chopra offers this reasonably priced video version of the core points found in his bestselling book of the same name. With interview footage with celebs like Olivia Newton-John (who has a labyrinth in her backyard) and Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics (who meditates for 30 minutes every morning), Chopra uses mostly voiceover to equate grand laws of physics and ecology with human success — but not in a social Darwinist way, thankfully. “Success depends on who you are, not what you do,” he says. The most memorable lessons, perhaps, are inspirational ways to deal with stress and disaster. Every low-point in our lives is an opportunity for transformation, he says, and, he asserts, if we stop fighting chaos in our daily lives, we will see the order unfold, and the path open up, as in nature. Or in other words, a reminder not to sweat the small stuff — and that, given our capacity for positive change, it’s all small stuff.

Golf’s Three Noble Truths: The Fine Art of Playing Awake
James Ragonnet

Ever wonder what drives grown men and women to hit a little ball, chase it around and, if they miss putting into a hole in the ground, succumb to tantrums? Perhaps the meaning of life is hidden in the answer to that question. Author James Ragonnet spent three decades dissecting the game to realize that “growth” is the unspoken mandate for all golfers — and for all human beings. Applying classic Buddhist teachings to the game, the author presents three core truths for exploration and mastery: Awareness, Balance, and Unity. The most dramatic and direct way for golfers to grow, says Ragonnet, is by “playing awake” — a term coined from the Buddhist notions of waking up, paying attention and sharpening awareness. But actually, most golfers and non-golfers alike are essentially sleepwalking and daydreaming. Noble bedside reading for “awakening.” (New World Library)

Relaxing piano CD
Peace of Mind
Steven Halpern

A purveyor of the Windham Hill sound, Steven Halpern does his peer George Winston one better: composing his solo piano tracks with sound-healing harmonic overtones that make it easy to “get into the gap” — or as Halpern describes it, “the space between notes and between thought.” Recorded as one two-hour improv, the disc is good for bringing the shoulders down and soothing the mind as well. Flowing, narrative and uplifting, the music is fun to soak up like a sponge, and the relaxed mind is likely to follow Halpern’s fingers across the ivories of his acoustic piano in unison with the “unseen force” Halpern says guided them.
