Be the Change, Be A Star
If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to put it on YouTube, does it make a sound? Progressive YouTube alternative, Quantum Shift TV, hopes to incentivize kids to get more involved in social change projects with their latest videography contest “Be the Change! Share the Story!”
Each contest entrant or team must be affiliated with a school and must produce two short videos documenting their participation in a socially or environmentally oriented project — from volunteering at a homeless shelter, to educating the local community on human rights, to measuring their school’s carbon footprint. The first video simply needs to introduce the project idea; the second video covers the project’s execution and results.
The winning school (judged by a combination of expert panel review and online buzz user-generated by the Quantum Shift community) gets $50,000 in funding and educational resources — including the opportunity to build an environmentally friendly recreational facility (like an eco-skatepark or organic garden) on school grounds or in the local community.
The underlying objective of “Be the Change!” said Hugo Bonjean, founder and CEO of Quantum Shift TV, is not merely to educate students on the many pressing issues facing the world today, but to encourage them to participate, take action, think positively and discover that individuals can make a difference.
“As we’ve seen with YouTube, Web video has a powerful ability to engage audiences, particularly youth, around the world,” said Bonjean. “Quantum Shift TV is using this power to inspire students to take action on the social and environmental issues of the day.”
The first video must be uploaded to QuantumShift.tv by December 15 and the second video by March 31, 2008. Winners will be announced in May.
