Old Town Not-for-Profits Get Help Paying the Bills

Funding for some not-for-profit organizations is difficult to come by, but thanks to The Old Town Merchants and Residents Association (OTMRA), six social justice and community action organizations operating in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood won’t have to worry about paying their bills for a while. The OTMRA recently awarded a total of $100,000 to the chosen not-for-profit organizations in support of their community action programs.

The recipients are: The Illinois Council Against Gun Violence, which educates the public, media and policy makers about the impact of gun violence; Franklin School, a magnet school located in the heart of Old Town; Immaculate Conception School, another school in the heart of Old Town giving children a strong academic foundation, mixed with life values and creative thinking; Alliance for Community Peace/Wyman A.M.E. Church, serving the area through after school programs for at-risk children and their families and providing a safe environment for students when school is not in session; Living Faith Community Church, which provides training and assistance for people who are transitioning in their lives and may have encountered barriers to entry into the workforce; and Near North Ministry, a coalition of religious leaders and churches who serve the diverse and emerging communities around Cabrini-Green.

“These organizations were chosen based on their involvement in the community and the initiative they’ve shown in meeting the needs of the residents of the Near North Side” said Mary Quincannon, President of OTMRA. “The programs range in focus from gun control to education, after school programs, literacy and employment preparedness.”
