Reincarnated Remnants

If you like the DIY aesthetic but worry you’re all thumbs with a hammer and a paintbrush, these artists and innovators have cleverly reincarnated unloved remnants of glass, steel and wood so you don’t have to.

Israel’s Reddish Studio “helps objects feel better about themselves” by reworking them in unexpected ways. This Bath & Beyond Chair was repurposed from an old bathtub that was cut, bent and dressed up with steel legs. Available by special order at reddishstudio.com.

«London-based TING melds luxury style with sustainability. Here, end-of-the-line seatbelt webbing was saved from a life in the landfill by becoming cheerful, candy-colored Seat Belt Pillows ($144), available at branchhome.com or tinglondon.com.

Brooklyn’s Uhuru uses materials with the least environmental impact possible in its designs, including the Stoolen, fashioned from collected workshop scraps and an old bicycle rim.» Starting at $2,000 at uhurudesign.com.

Bicycle aficionado Andy Gregg turned a lifetime hobby into an art form. His Modulus Loveseat ($900) was constructed from recycled chrome bicycle rims and tubing and is available online at bikefurniture.com.

«Justin Parker and Andi Kovel use wind power fueled furnaces in their Portland-based studio — called Esque — to hand-make unique, functional art out of recycled glass. These Slumped Vases start at $314 and are available at branchhome.com or esque-studio.com.

Samuel Moyer takes 100-year-old wood and introduces it to the 21st century at his downtown LA studio. His Brothers and Sisters Table ($5,600) was constructed with antique black walnut and maple butterfly joints. Visit samuelmoyerfurniture.com.
