Marriott Hotels Turn Green
With so many hotels to choose from when traveling, why not choose one that’s environmentally friendly? According to the Green Hotel Association, there are over 65 green hotels currently located in the U.S., and although the number is expected to increase over the next few years, very few of these are associated with the big hotel chains. That is until Marriott International recently announced that it’s also turning green.
Marriott is building its first green hotel in Baltimore, MD, on the property that was once home to the Baltimore Brewing Company. The new 154 room Fairfield Inn & Suites at Brewer’s Park is expected to open in the spring of 2009 and will incorporate materials from the original brewery into the hotel’s design, including beer storage tanks, bricks and the original Baltimore Brewery sign.
“The new Fairfield Inn & Suites will bring us closer to achieving two major Marriott initiatives — to become a greener and a more diverse company,” said Bill Marriott. “By 2010, we plan to have 500 minority and women owned hotels. We’re currently at 400, and Marriott is on track to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one million tons, a goal we set in 2000.”
Now that Marriott is building green hotels, more big hotel chains may soon follow. For more information, visit usgbc.org or Marriott.com.
