A Greener World — One Click at a Time

The idea of creating a greener world by way of the Internet might seem a bit incongruous, but a new website devoted to environmental sustainability may be on the verge of doing just that.

Makemesustainable.com is a virtual neighborhood where eco-enthused users come together to monitor their environmental impact, discuss ways to reduce carbon emissions and track monetary savings rendered by small alterations to daily habits.

The process begins with a brief survey that asks questions pertaining to one’s dietary patterns, living environment and mode of transportation. Once those questions have been answered, a carbon calculator determines the weight of the users ecological footprint.

According to creators David Delcourt, Ben Brown and Adam Schrader-Brown, the website is not a social network site but is best used as an agent for social change.

“As 2008 rolls on, individuals need to start taking action and feel that they are empowered in this space,” says Brown.

Makemesustainable.com doesn’t just make the user aware of the environmental problems their causing but also offers an array of solutions. For example, reducing newspaper usage or declining the clerk’s offer to double bag items at the grocery store could result in savings as much as $26.98, while reducing carbon output by .67 tons each year.
