Kick the Meat Habit

If you’ve ever toyed with the idea of going vegetarian, March 20 is the day to give it a whirl. This year the Great American Meatout celebrates its 24th anniversary as the world’s largest annual grassroots diet-education campaign. Advocates of nonviolent, plant-based diets will use the day to encourage their friends and neighbors to give veggie burgers a chance or swap their dairy for a soy or almond-based brands.

The global Meatout is coordinated by the Farm Animal Reform Movement, with individual events organized by local consumers and animal protection groups. Celebrity backers include Joaquin Phoenix, Alicia Silverstone, Bill Maher, Casey Kasem, Mary Tyler-Moore and Ed Asner.

This year’s slogan is “Kick the Meat Habit — It’s Good for Your Heart.” But, a plant-based diet also promotes animal rights and is good for the environment. Visit meatout.org to find an event near you or to register your own.
