Jeanne Pinsof Nolan

Organic Gardener

Interview and Photo by Christine Mangan

Chicago-area native Jeanne Pinsof Nolan (preparing to welcome her second child) is the project manager of The Green City Market’s The Edible Gardens (chicagogreencitymarket.org), a hands-on program that strives to build relationships between children and sustainable food. After spending 17 years on an organic farm in California, Nolan is also putting her expertise to use with the creation of The Organic Gardener Ltd, where she works side-by-side with families and businesses to help them create their own organic gardens (theorganicgardener.net).

Favorite spot to grab a meal

North Pond Restaurant. Chef Bruce Sherman is very involved in the Green City Market, and he sources a large amount of his food locally and seasonally. On top of that, he’s an artist. He has a wondeful touch with food.

Must-have items at Chicago’s Green City Market

My daughter’s absolute favorite is the stawberry-raspberry jam mix made by Tomato Mountain. It is amazing. Also, all the plants that I use in the gardens I build are bought from farmers at the Green City Market. They’re the best because they’re farm-raised.

A local who inspires me

Abby Mandel, the founder of Green City Market is a great inspiration to me. She has the rare ability to make her vision a reality and has created a market that brings local, sustainable food to Chicago.

Favorite place to connect with nature

I love to go to Lake Michigan and look out at the expanse of water and horizon. It reminds me of my place within the huge force of nature around us.

My favorite garden that I’ve built in the city so far...

I’m very excited about the rooftop garden at Uncommon Ground Restaurant. The design phase has been a collaboration of gardeners, metal-workers, carpenters, restauranteurs, etc. I love team work, collaboration and the process of bringing a dream to reality, and this project encompasses all of that.
